2022 race briefing
Cynthia Mendes represented District 18 in the Rhode Island State Senate from January 2021 to January 2023. She won the seat in 2020 by defeating incumbent Sen. William Conley Jr. in the Democratic primary.
In 2022 she ran for lieutenant governor instead of seeking re-election. She ran as a team with gubernatorial candidate Matt Brown on Medicare for All-style health care, a Green New Deal, a $19 minimum wage, and more shelter and affordable housing.
Incumbent Sabina Matos won the September 13, 2022 Democratic primary with 47.1%, ahead of Deborah Ruggiero at 33.1% and Mendes at 19.8%. Matos went on to win the November general election. PolRev covered her 2022 campaign, and this page remains as a record of that race.
