    Candidate briefing

Mai Vang is a Sacramento City Council member and a 2026 candidate for California’s 7th Congressional District. She has represented District 8 since 2020 and is the first Asian American woman and first person of Hmong descent elected to the council.

In the June 2 top-two primary, Vang finished first with 31.2% of the vote, ahead of longtime incumbent Doris Matsui at 29.1%. The two Democrats meet again on November 3 in one of the state’s most closely watched intra-party races.

Justice Democrats, Our Revolution and the Working Families Party have endorsed her. The Sacramento Bee’s editorial board endorsed her on October 31, saying voters have a chance to choose a representative ready to bring new energy to Washington. Why Political Revolution supports her: she out-polled a long-time incumbent in the primary and is making the case for generational, working-class change in Sacramento’s House seat.
