Richard Watkins holds a Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and founded the Science Policy Action Network, where he served as CEO.
He ran for the open seat in North Carolina’s 4th Congressional District in 2022, campaigning on climate action, ending the war on drugs and gun safety. In the crowded May 17, 2022 Democratic primary, Valerie Foushee won with 46.1%, Nida Allam placed second with 37.0%, and Watkins received 1.3%.
