Abdul El-Sayed is Michigan’s U.S. senator-elect, winning the open seat Gary Peters is leaving. An epidemiologist and the former health director for Detroit and Wayne County, he won the August 4 primary and defeated Republican former Rep. Mike Rogers on November 3, according to NBC News projections. He will be the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate.
He campaigned in every corner of the state, from Upper Peninsula barns to Detroit churches, on Medicare for All, affordability, unions and getting money out of politics. Barack Obama and Bernie Sanders rallied with him in October, and Muhammad Ali’s daughter and grandson endorsed him in Detroit on November 1.
