Canepa earned a degree from the University of San Francisco.
With no incumbent in the race, he finished second in the June 7, 2022 top-two primary with 24.1% of the vote, behind Kevin Mullin (41.1%) and ahead of Republican Gus Mattammal (16.5%) and Democrat Emily Beach (14.6%). In the November 8, 2022 general election Mullin won 55.5% to 44.5%.
