For the last decade, Jon Grant has been a champion for affordable housing and progressive legislation in Seattle, serving as a housing advocate with Solid Ground and later joining the Tenants Union (TU), an organization focused on housing justice in 2010. Jon was appointed Executive Director of the TU in 2010, and successfully led the organization through financial difficulties by increasing the budget, hiring new staff, and opening new offices in Seattle and Spokane. His initiatives tripled the number of people served by the TU and supported new tenants’ rights legislation. Jon’s advocacy for affordable and safe housing has also resulted in a number of legislative achievements, including a Seattle city ordinance in 2012, requiring landlords to demonstrate the health and safety of their properties, and Senate Bill 5528 in 2013 that expanded protections for domestic violence survivors facing discrimination. Most recently, Jon worked to pass I-1433, raising the minimum wage in Washington.
Jon’s campaign platform reflects his commitment to progressive causes. He believes that housing is a human right and he calls for garnering support for Tenant Collective Bargaining Rights, supports a 25% Affordability Mandate on All New Development, and the creation of an Office of the Tenant Advocate. In the spirit of progressivism, he has committed to fighting corporations against intrusive market speculation and advocating for policies ensuring companies such as Google and Amazon pay their fair share of taxes. He supports stronger civilian oversight of the Seattle police department and restorative justice for juvenile offenders rather than youth jail. His platform also supports efforts to improve gender pay equity, expand municipal broadband, and fight climate change. Jon has proven leadership ability, experience passing progressive legislation, and a fantastic platform.
