Gearing Up for the Midterms
Original Article Written by Anthony Pannullo on Medium
As we reach the middle of the summer in this midterm year, we are also in the midst of primary season. Around this time last year, progressive candidates began announcing their bid for all levels of public office. Now is the time for us to witness the culmination of our hard work for these candidates.
In nearly all 50 states and Puerto Rico, we have endorsed numerous candidates who went on to win their primaries and are heading to their general elections in November. This was not accomplished by us alone, as we typically share our efforts with Our Revolution, Justice Democrats, similar groups, many thousands of volunteers, and millions of like-minded voters.
Some of our highlights came in on the night of June 26th, where Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez became the Democratic nominee for New York’s 14th Congressional District. Ocasio-Cortez defeated ten-term incumbent and establishment machine, Joe Crowley, in a bid to transform how her district is represented. Of course, she was outspent significantly, but this race showed that the power of people can overcome the influence of big money interests. Although it is very likely for her to win in this district, she is not taking anything for granted and will continue to work hard to rally the people of her district and across the United States.
Next, we head south to Maryland, where Ben Jealous became the Democratic nominee for the governorship. Like Alexandria, Ben was a significant contributor to the Bernie Sanders campaign in 2016. This was certainly a high-profile race for many progressives across the country. This former NAACP chief and union-backed candidate is looking to continue the progressive movement. It is not enough to simply elect Democrats, as not all Democrats represent the interests of their party members nor the country.
Every week, our team of moderators and highly-active members will vote on a series of candidates. These candidates are elected democratically among our participants. Next, we publish weekly transparency reports which can be found at the top of the subreddit. This report ensures that we are best serving the sub’s interests. Our voting members will research the proposed candidates. It is also important for us to host AMAs and gather a general idea of how a candidate is perceived among our community.
We would like to extend a thank you to our members, our moderation team, our external facilitators, and every single people across this great country who allows the Political Revolution to continue. Forever forward!
