Alan Pugh is a dedicated citizen of Elyria, Ohio, having lived there for ten years. Alan cares deeply about the community in Elyria, and is committed to moving Elyria forward. Alan has been a progressive voice in his community for years. He stood with striking Camaco workers and the Fight for 15 movement, marched with Black Lives Matter to oppose police brutality, and petitioned to enact sensible cannabis laws in the city . Now, Alan is standing with Elyria to move it into the future.
During the Bernie Sanders campaign, Alan oversaw the launch of the Lorain County for Bernie Sanders field office. The volunteers for Lorain County made over one thousand calls and knocked on four hundred doors for the Sanders campaign. The group then went on to support Janet Garrett in her fight against Freedom Caucus member Jim Jordan.
Alan is the voice of progressivism in Elyria, and wants to bring the energy that inspired him during the Bernie Sanders campaign to Elyria City Council. He believes the city’s biggest crisis is the opioid epidemic and that it can be improved by treating addiction as a public health matter. He also believes that Elyria needs to be more accessible – meaning better public transit and a more walkable, bikeable city. He will also fight to rebuild the city’s infrastructure, continuing the work started with Issue 6.
Alan believes we need to revitalize Elyria. Elyria and the surrounding county have hundreds of people without homes, and the city has a large number of vacant homes. Using a land bank and other resources, he would like to provide the homeless population with homes, tools, and maintenance training, giving them opportunities to become homeowners while eliminating the dangers of vacant houses. He will work with commercial property owners to open up empty storefronts to local entrepreneurs and continue rebuilding the local economy.
Alan seeks to re-engage the people Elyria by making city government completely transparent, livestreaming city meetings and building a robust online presence for the city, providing a direct link between citizens and their local officials. He will fight for better public transit, protect libraries and public schools, and stand with union workers to fight for the working class at every opportunity.
Because of his vision and his dedication to progress in Elyria both as a citizen and activist, we are proud to stand with Alan Pugh for City Council. Please visit Alan’s website to support his efforts.
